A Survivor’s Thoughts

A Survivor’s Thoughts On Power And Control

...Women are the only oppressed group in our society that lives in intimate association with their oppressors...
- Evelyn Cunningham

What are some of the warning signs of controlling behaviour?

  • Does your partner/friend need to know where you are at all times?
  • Does your partner/friend need to know whom you are with when not with them?
  • Does your partner/friend behave in any way similar to a stalker?
  • Does your partner/friend discourage you from having any friends and/or a relationship with your family?
  • Does your partner/friend discourage you or talk you out of going out anywhere without them?
  • Does your partner/friend manage to change your beliefs about an activity that you enjoy or would like to start, such as swimming, biking, walking or meeting with friends for coffee, so that you would not even start the activity or stop doing it?
  • Does your partner/friend exhibit his knowledge about various subjects to such an extent that you no longer have your own beliefs about the subject? Does your partner/friend need to be everywhere with you?
  • Does your partner/friend isolate you?
  • Does your partner/friend convince you that he is superior and that females are to be submissive in every aspect of their lives together? In other words, as a female, you do not have a voice.
